Wives should be submissive to their husbands because it is a biblical injunction. Ephesians 5:23 says, ” The husband is the head of the wife”. As the head, God has placed the husband in a higher role of authority over his wife. 1 Corinthians 11:3 says, ” But I would have you know, that the head of every man is Christ; and the head of the woman is the man; and the head of Christ is God.” 1 Timothy 2: 11-13 says, “Let a woman learn in quietness, in entire submissiveness. I allow no woman to teach or to have authority over men; she is to remain in quietness and keep silence [in religious assemblies]. For Adam was first formed, then Eve”. Additionally, ‘wives should submit in everything to their husbands.” [1] However, they will excuse them in matters that are unbiblical and sinful.
There are numerous benefits of being submissive to one’s husband. The first is obedience to the Word of God. Titus 2:5 admonishes wives to be “obedient to their own husbands, that the word of God be not blasphemed.” Wives should be submissive to their husbands, so that the Word of God is not blasphemed or discredited. Obedience presupposes a right standing with God that brings peace, joy and hope. Also, when one begins to obey and desires to obey, it shows spiritual and emotional growth. Again, there is a strong presumption that when wives are submissive to their husbands, it brings out the best in them. In other words, they will be more willing to do whatever it takes to please their spouse. In the long run, this brings contentment and satisfaction to the couple and their marriage blossoms.
